1. There was controversy in relation to party members that did not exist in Saenuri Party. A report says that the members who participated in opinion poll moved to other places or even died.

Kim Moo-sung, the chairperson of Saenuri Party, said it is all lies.


2. A daycare teacher faced monetary penalties of 3 million Korean Won for slapping a 4-year-old with a food tray. The teacher denied her charges, saying the child got hurt in the forehead amid children at play.

The teacher also wanted to say it is all lies.

3. A research found that one in two men may have decreased sperm number or quality if they keep a cell phone in a pocket close to their testicles. Their sperm quality is more likely to be affected by four times.

Considering the radiofrequency electromagnetic waves from a cell phone, what will happen to the men who live close to the THAAD deployment?


4. Chimaek, a combination of chicken and beer is the youngsters’ popular menu in Korea’s drinking culture. But gammaek, a combination of French fries and beer entered into the culture followed by another menu, burmaek, a combination of burger and beer.

Anything will be fine with cool beer. But you will have to take responsibility for your big belly.


5. Working mothers of preschoolers spend an average of 2.48 hours during weekdays whereas housewives spend 4.2 hours on child-rearing. In contrast, fathers whether single or double income spend less than one hour on child-rearing.

Mothers are not wholly responsible for childcare. Fathers, please get your butt off the couch.


6. A research found that drinking more than one cup of coffee will improve the bone health of menopausal women. The effect of coffee garners medical attention as people could reduce their chances of developing liver cirrhosis if they drank more coffee.

In this case, the effect of coffee is equivalent to aspirin. This should be covered by health insurance.

7. Is it voidable marriage when a woman who was raped before marriage had a child and did not inform the matter to her husband? The Supreme Court said in its decision that it is not voidable.

Don’t couples get married to love each other from the moment on? Don’t ask me about the past.

Regarding the deployment of a THAAD system to South Korea, the Defense Ministry will choose a deployment spot first and then persuade residents who live on the spot. Army officials see Pyeongtaek in Kyeonggi Province, Daegu and Waegwan in Gyeongbuk Province and Gunsan in Jeolla Province as potential candidates for THAAD deployment.

Why worry? The spot should be where lawmakers who agree with THAAD deployment live.

2. ‘개성공단 전면 중단’으로 북한에 대한 국제사회의 제재와 압박을 주도하겠다는 것이 박근혜 정부의 구상입니다. 하지만, 미국에서는 대화가 필요하다는 주장이 나오고 있고 일본은 북한과 물밑 대화를 하겠다고 합니다.

A study found that air pollutants may lead to the formation of dark spots, known as facial liver spots. In addition, Asian women are more likely to have liver spots than Caucasian women.

I hope youngsters who struggled to get a job maintain their job.

2. 더불어민주당 문재인 전 대표는 서울 도심 대규모집회에 참석했다 경찰의 물대포를 맞고 위중한 상황에 빠진 농민 백남기씨를 찾아 가족들을 위로했습니다.

찾아가 사과할 사람도 있을 텐데 말야…

Jae-in Moon, the former leader of Minjoo Party paid a visit to the family of Korean farmer Nam-ki Baek who was critically injured by high-powered police water cannons at mass protest.

There must be others who visited and apologize to the family, I think.

3. 외교부는 한일 위안부 피해자 문제 합의와 관련해 여성가족부 등 관련 부처와 긴밀히 협의해 재단 설립을 비롯한 후속 조치 시행에 만전을 기해 나갈 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

According to the Supreme Court’s decision, the man in his 50s who was brought to the trial for killing a neighbor dog with chainsaw in response to protect his own dog violated the Animal Welfare Act in Korea.

Does this mean my dog is a family member whereas other people’s dog is a livestock?

6. 질병관리본부가 중동호흡기증후군(메르스) 사태로 방역체계를 개편한 뒤 ‘소두증 바이러스’로 불리는 지카바이러스로 첫 시험대에 올랐습니다.

암튼 전염병은 초기에 잡아야 해…

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s capability to handle Zika virus will be assessed after enhancing preventive measures against epidemics as a result of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) crisis.

Infectious diseases must be controlled in the first place.

7. 담뱃값 인상의 최대 수혜자는 외국 담배회사였습니다. 지난해 담배 가격이 올랐음에도 궐련담배(일반 담배) 수입 규모는 오히려 오름세로 돌아선 것으로 나타났습니다.

담배피는 사람만 봉이었다는 얘기군.

It turned out that the main beneficiary of cigarette price hike was foreign-made. Despite the price increase last year, more cigarettes are imported in Korea, resulting in price rise.

So only smoker suffer a great loss.

8. 이태원 살인사건의 진범으로 지목돼 재판에 넘겨진 미국인 아더 패터슨에 대한 1심 선고도 오늘 내려집니다.

이제는 진실이 밝혀 질려나…

The sentence of Arthur Patterson who was identified as the culprit in the case of Itaewon Homicide will be decided on the first trial today.

I hope the truth will be revealed this time.

1. 박근혜 대통령이 핵협상 타결로 서방의 경제제재가 해제된 이란을 방문하는 방안을 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌습니다.

이제 경제제재하는 나라는 북한만 남았나?

President Geun-hye Park is considering visiting Iran where most economic sanctions are lifted in a follow-up to a nuclear deal reached with the United States.

So North Korea is the only country left with economic sanctions?

2. 한국의 국가청렴도가 100점 만점에 56점으로 세계에서 37위를 기록했습니다. 7년 연속 정체된 모습을 보이고 있습니다.

7년? 그럼 그분이 대통령 하면서부턴데…

According to the 2015 Corruptions Perceptions Index (CPI) by Transparency International, South Korea was ranked 37th, scoring 56 out of 100 (very clean). Korea remained unchanged for seven years in a row.

Seven years? That’s when he inaugurated as the president of the Republic of Korea.

That’s a desirable policy. Please enjoy your holidays without peer pressure. This leads to job creation.

4. 골프 라운딩 중 캐디를 강제추행한 혐의로 기소돼 징역 6월에 집행유예 1년, 사회봉사 40시간을 선고받은 박희태 전 국회의장이 법원에 상고장을 제출했습니다. 집행유예면 감옥가는 것도 아닌데 사회봉사도 안하시겠다?

Former National Assembly Speaker Hee-tae Park who was sentenced to a suspended one-year jail term and 40 hours of community service after being accused of sexual harassment and abuse a female golf caddie in last June submitted an appeal.

You don’t have to serve in prison if you are on probation and you don’t even want to do community service.

5. 11살 딸을 집에 감금하고 밥을 굶기는 등 장기간 학대한 혐의로 기소된 30대 아버지와 계모가 첫 재판에서 혐의를 모두 인정한다며 국민참여재판은 원하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.

이제 반성들 좀 하셨나? 그래도 감옥은 밥은 제때 주잖아…

Father and stepmother of an 11-year old who were accused of starving and physically abusing the girl admitted all the charges and said they did not go through public trial.

I hope you regret what you have done. But in prison, you will have three measl a day.

6. 지난해 논란 끝에 확정된 ‘국정교과서’가 집필진뿐 아니라 ‘집필기준’마저 발표되지 않아 궁금했는데, 교육부는 새해 업무계획을 발표하면서 이미 ‘집필기준’을 마련해 집필을 시작했다고 밝혔습니다.

그 집필기준 좀 알면 안될까. 안되겠지?

Regarding the government-issued textbooks, which sparked controversy last year, the Korean government did not announce the academic panel of history textbooks and standards of writing textbooks. The Ministry of Education announced plans in the new year that history textbooks are being written under the ‘standards’.

1. 새누리당 원유철 원내대표는 많은 전문가와 국민들이 한국 경제 성장을 가로막는 위협 중 하나로 바로 정치권을 지목하고 있다고 야당을 비판했습니다. 정치권이 오히려 법안을 제때 처리하지 못하고 개혁의 걸림돌이 되고 있는 현실이 장애라고 말했습니다.

157석의 여당이 5% 득표한 정당에게 4석도 못주겠다고 버티면서 선거구획정도 못하는 책임자가 누구?

Yu-chul Won, the majority leader in Saenuri Party—Korea’s ruling party—criticized the main opposition party as many experts and the public blame politics for sluggish economy. He added that politicians did not pass pending bills on time, which eventually became an obstacle to reform.

Who’s responsible for determining electoral district while the ruling party that controls 157 seats in the 300-member National Assembly does not give 4 seats who won 5% of seats?

2. 한국은행이 26일 발표한 ‘2015년 4/4분기 및 연간 국내총생산’ 자료에 따르면 지난해 실질 국내총생산(GDP)은 전년보다 2.6% 성장한 것으로 나타났다. 2%대의 성장률을 기록한 것은 2014년(3.3%) 이후 1년 만입니다.

이게 다 노동계 탓이고 야당 탓이겠죠? 딩동댕~

The Bank of Korea on the 26th of January said in ‘Annual Gross Domestic Product and the fourth quarter of 2015’ that substantial GDP growth marked 2.6% compared to a year ago. The two-percent growth was the first time in one year after the Korean economy reached its 3.3% growth in 2014.

Why not blame the labor sector and the main opposition party? Bingo!

3. 지난해 전국 아파트 전셋값은 4.8% 오르며 2014년 연간 상승률(4.4%)을 넘어 섰습니다. 특히 서울은 같은 기간 7.5%로 2014년(4.9%)에 비해 큰 폭의 오름세입니다. 전국의 아파트 매매가격 대비 전세가율도 지난해 12월 처음으로 74.0%에 진입했습니다. 역시 최고점을 경신했습니다.

우리나라 경제팀 훌륭해. 부동산은 산이 아니야. 꼭대기까지 안올라가도 된다니까.

In 2015, Jeonse of apartments nationwide have surged by 4.8%, surpassing an annual growth of 4.4%. Seoul, in particular, has been skyrocketing 7.5% over the same period, which is higher than 4.9% in 2014. The ratio of apartment prices to Jeonse became 74%, the first time in December last year, breaking the record again.

Well done, economic team in Korea. I am telling you that Korea’s real estate is not mountain. You don’t have to make it to the top.

Jeonse: a real estate term unique to South Korea that refers to the way generally apartments are leased. A tenant will make a lump-sum deposit (generally 50-80% of market value) for two years on an apartment instead of paying monthly rent.

4. 정부와 새누리당은 열정페이 근절을 위한 ‘인턴가이드라인’을 1월 중 발표하기로 했습니다. 인턴 기간을 6개월 미만으로 하고, 야간 연장도 금지합니다. 다만 인턴 제도 자체가 위축되는 것을 막기 위해 ‘일을 가르치는 것’과 ‘일을 시키는 것’을 구분하기로 했습니다.

The Korean government and Saenuri Party will announce the so called ‘Internship Guideline’ to eradicate unpaid internship program in January. The duration of internship program will be up to six months and working overtime is banned. However, the government will distinguish between ‘helping interns work’ and ‘pushing interns to work’ in order to maintain internship program.

5. 유치원 교사 1만 8000여 명의 임금 지급이 미뤄졌습니다. 월급 체불이 시작된 곳은 누리과정 예산이 전액 삭감된 서울과 경기와 광주, 전남 지역 입니다.
이러다가 애들 유치원도 못보내겠군. 이건 또 누구 탓? 나중에 교사와 학부형 책임으로 돌리지는 않겠지.

Over 18,000 preschool teachers’ payment of wages is delayed. They teach in areas such as Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gwang-ju and Jeonnam where budget allocation for free childcare and preschool program is significantly reduced.

Well, parents can’t even send their children to preschool. Who will be blamed? No one knows she will pass the buck to teachers and parents.

6. 공직사회의 경쟁력을 높이기 위해 공무원의 인사관리가 직무와 성과 중심으로 개편됩니다. 개정안은 성과평가 결과 우수 공무원에게는 승진, 특별승진, 특별승급, 상여금 지급 등 인사상 우대조치를 취하도록 의무화했다.

7. 기시다 후미오 일본 외무상이 지난 22일 ‘독도가 일본 땅’이라고 주장한 것에 대해 북한은 “세상에 이런 뻔뻔스럽고 철면피한 나라가 또 어디 있겠는가”라며 “일본이 아무리 독도를 제 땅이라고 골백번을 우겨대도 진실은 결코 달라질 수 없다”고 했답니다.

북한 아나운서 목소리가 생생히 들리는 듯…

8. 한국물가협회는 6대 도시 전통시장 8곳의 차례용품 29개 품목 가격을 조사한 결과 설 차례상 비용이 4인 가족 기준 19만 5920원으로 지난해 18만 8760원 보다 3.8% 올랐다고 밝혔습니다. 전통시장이 대형마트보다 5만8천원 싼 것으로 나타났습니다.

역시 올해도 올랐군. 전통시장 주차장 어떻게 좀 해줘~

Korea Price Research Center found that 29 items for ancestral rites in 8 traditional markets in 6 major cities and the price for ancestral rites for one household (four family members) has surged by 3.8% from 188,760 Korean won (189 US dollars) to 195,920 Korean won (196 US dollars). It says the price of traditional markets is about 58,000 Korean won (58 US dollars) cheaper than big supermarkets.

Another price hike this year as expected. Please do something about parking lots in traditional markets so we can buy our groceries cheaper.

1. 체감온도가 영하 30도까지 떨어진 24일 소녀상을 지키며 26일째 노숙을 이어가고 있는 대학생들을 마이나 키아이 유엔 ‘평화적 집회 및 결사의 자유 특별 보고관’이 찾았습니다. 마이나 키아이 보고관은 소녀상을 살펴보고, 한일 합의에 반대하며 소녀상을 지키고 있는 대학생들을 만나 이야기를 나눴습니다.

그 먼데서도 오시는데, 가까이 계시는 분은 어떻게 한번 안 오시나?

In a cold day that reached as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius in Korea, the UN officer visited a group of college students in Korea who spent 26 days on the street, protecting the statue of a teenage girl (represents “comfort women” who served as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during WWII). He inspected the statue and talked with the students who opposed the Japan-Korea agreement over wartime sex slaves by protecting the statue.

The UN officer came all the way to pay a visit to the statue but how come the person who lives nearby never visits the statue?

2. 세월호 특조위에 파견된 해양수산부의 3급 공무원이, 세월호 유족에 대한 고발과 특조위 해체 주장을 해온 보수단체와 결탁해 온 정황이 드러났습니다.보수단체인 ‘태극의열단’의 오성탁 대표는 양심선언 후 해수부 3급 공무원 임 씨를 검찰에 고발한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

해수부 공무원보고 해수부 조사하라고 하니 저 짓을 하지… 에휴~

A government officer from the Special Investigation Commission in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries who was sent to investigate the Sewol Ferry Disaster conspired with a conservative group who accused the families of the Sewol Ferry Disaster and demanded the break-up the Commission. After having declaration of conscience, the president of the conservative group accused the officer of committing the crime.

No wonder why that happens as the officer from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries was asked to investigate the very ministry he belongs.

3. 부산에서 70대 할머니가 자신의 기초생활수급비를 아껴서 모은 돈으로 장학금을 내놨습니다. 기초생활보호 대상자인 할머니가 내놓을 장학금 100만 원은 매월 자신이 받는 기초생계·주거급여·노령연금 55만 원 가운데 10만 원씩을 아껴서 모은 것이라고 합니다.

이런 걸 보면 없어서 못 한다는 건 다 핑계지요… 할머님 고맙습니다~

A 70 year old lady who relied on basic living expenses given by the government offered a scholarship. The scholarship she offered was 1,000 US dollars and she saved 100 US dollars per month from her basic living expenses and age pension.

When you see such cases, you cannot make an excuse that you don’t have money to help someone. Thank you so much, grandma.

4. 고층아파트에 사는 사람이 심정지가 발생하면 높은 층에 사는 사람일수록 생존율이 낮다는 조사결과가 나왔습니다. 고층아파트에 사는 사람이 심정지가 발생했을 때는 3층 이하에 사는 사람이 생존율이 가장 높고 25층 이상에 사는 사람은 살아날 가능성이 제로에 가까운 것으로 나타났습니다.

거까지 올라갔다 내려오는 시간이 있을 테니까… 로얄층이 로얄층이 아닌게지~

A research found that people who live in high-rise apartments have the low survival rate if they have cardiac arrest. Those who live in the third floor or below are more likely to survive whereas those who live on or above the 25th floor are less likely to survive—the survival rate was almost 0 percent.

It takes time to go up and down. Well, living in the high-rise apartment does not represent rich life any more.
