South Korea’s agriculture minister urges vigilance against latest bird flu outbreak

South Korea’s agriculture minister has urged local authorities to take all necessary measures, in order to halt the spread of the country’s latest avian influenza outbreak. The highly contagious H5N8 virus has been discovered at chicken farms in Jeju Island and Jeollabuk-do Province, prompting the government to suspend all sales of live poultry nationwide. It also raised its bird flu warning to “severe”, the second-highest level in its four-tier system. Following the outbreak, more than 10,000 ducks and chickens from 14 farms have been culled in Jeju alone.
